The three-track project plays like a miniature journey through moods, textures, and sonic directions, offering listeners a glimpse into an artist unafraid of shifting styles while keeping a clear sense of identity.
The title track opens with the roar of a rocket, building in intensity before it fades into the distance. As we break through the atmosphere, the sound dissolves, giving way to guitar and drums that immediately shift the song’s direction. A catchy solo guides the entry, yet it never quite reveals where the track will head. That sense of unpredictability is key to its charm. The rhythm is sly, slightly hypnotic, and groove-driven. It isn’t rushed, but it pulses with a steady energy that makes your head move in time. The chord progression is layered and rhythmic, creating a hypnotic tension that feels otherworldly. In the chorus, there’s a trace of Bowie’s influence, particularly in the melodic lift, which adds character without imitation.
The second piece, The Funky Martian, picks up where the opener leaves off, but with a playful twist. Again, Mason places an engaging solo upfront, simple in its shape yet memorable. Soon after, an almost alien-sounding vocal takes over, pulling the song into experimental territory. The lyrics feel delivered through a filter, creating a sense of detachment that contrasts the lively groove underneath. It’s a clever way to push the listener into a slightly surreal space, while still maintaining the danceable pulse established earlier.
Closing the EP is Earthsick, the most atmospheric of the set. A gentle pad sets the stage, pastoral and bucolic, almost cinematic. Then a crunchy guitar breaks through, its tone balancing the softness of the intro. Once again, a light solo adds air, and the song grows into something cosmic, dreamlike, and expansive. Of the three, this track stretches furthest toward new age territory, evoking the idea of a cosmic mirage.
Overall, Mason delivers an EP that feels concise yet full of character. Each track offers its own surprise, but together they form a coherent vision. It is music that moves between the earthly and the cosmic, reminding us that experimentation, when guided by instinct, can still sound inviting.
