There’s something nostalgic here, but it’s filtered through a futuristic haze. Imagine discovering a forgotten Polaroid in a dystopian city decades from now—faded but strangely magnetic.
The guitars echo with a familiar post-punk chill, somewhere between The Cure and a more current alt-rock outfit. It’s retro but not dated, modern without being overproduced. The blend works because it feels natural, not calculated.
Northern Lights leans further into alternative rock territory, with a standout vocal recording that features a slightly radio-like compression, giving the track a hazy, dreamlike patina.
There’s a punk undertow to Bold Boy’s songwriting—raw, restless, and real. But alongside that energy, you hear threads of gothic rock and early 2000s emo. In The Comfort is the most rhythmically aggressive track on the EP, with a bassline that grinds forward and a chord progression that gives the track its drive. It might just be the standout here—tight, catchy, and full of attitude.
Closing track Sanctuary shifts the mood, offering something more reflective. It’s slower, softer, and gives space to a more vulnerable side of the band. The introspection feels honest, like the end of a long night where the noise has settled and only thoughts remain.
Bold Boy manage to pull off a sound that’s refreshingly hard to pin down. There’s 1980s DNA here, but it’s spliced with the grit of modern punk and the emotional pull of indie rock. This isn’t revival—it’s reinvention.
