Good Day Noir Family,
Matthew Lee & the Standbys deliver an intimate, emotionally rich journey with Black Book, an album that balances raw storytelling, atmospheric instrumentation, and theatrical delivery with remarkable consistency.

Black Book is Matthew Lee and the Standbys’ Album Out Now

It is a record built on mood and character as much as melody, and each song opens a new window into the band’s world.

The opener, “Falling Apart,” hooks you right away. A dramatic vocal approach mixes with an alternative-leaning rhythm, creating a refined yet moody atmosphere. The melody leans nostalgic, and the emotional tension gives the listener a sense of entering a story already in motion. It’s a striking start, both expressive and immersive.

Next comes “Dorothy,” a track that begins with a chord progression reminiscent of Oasis, but with a fuzzed-out guitar tone that adds an unexpected edge. The vocal delivery carries shades of Adam Duritz, particularly in the way phrases stretch and bend around the rhythm. The minimalist framework works beautifully, giving space for the melody to unfold with personality.

One of the album’s standout pieces is “Again.” The opening progression slices through the air before shifting into a luminous and introspective landscape. A soft piano line adds sparkle and depth, helping shape a moment that feels almost suspended in time. The band channels a sense of emotional reflection reminiscent of Live’s more delicate tracks, bringing a mixture of intensity and fragility.

“World’s End” continues the journey with a gentle acoustic arpeggio that evokes the pastoral warmth of Cat Stevens. The writing here leans into tenderness, allowing the band’s softer side to shine through. There’s a sweetness in the melodic choices and a comforting flow that makes the track feel like a safe harbor.

Matthew Lee’s strengths as a composer surface repeatedly. His instinct for melody, combined with his ability to shape emotional narratives through arrangement, forms the backbone of the album.

“Rivers in Your Eyes” deepens the cinematic tone. The atmosphere feels rich and refined, with lyrical imagery that seems to paint itself directly across the listener’s imagination. It’s one of the most visually evocative tracks on the record.

The album closes with “My, Oh My,” a track driven by an alternative-leaning rhythm and sharp, slightly acidic guitars that open the sonic landscape wide. The synth pads elevate the space further, creating lift and momentum as the album moves toward its final breath.

Black Book is a thoughtful, atmospheric, and skillfully crafted album. Matthew Lee & the Standbys demonstrate artistic clarity and emotional sensitivity, making this a project worthy of attention.
