Good Day Noir Family,
With a title like Broken, you might expect a quiet, introspective ballad or a formulaic alt-rock lament.
Broken is Deflecting Ghosts’ Single Out Now
But Deflecting Ghosts deliver something far richer, a track that feels like it emerged straight from a smoky rehearsal room sometime in the mid-’90s, then time-travelled into the present with its rawness intact.
This is not nostalgia for its own sake, this is music forged in the tension between heaviness and vulnerability.
The song kicks off with a mysterious arpeggio, tight, deliberate, and slightly eerie. It doesn’t explode immediately; it builds, like steam hissing through old pipes before the pressure finally bursts. When the full band drops in, the distortion doesn’t overwhelm; it supports. There’s a restraint here that feels intentional, the kind you only get from musicians who have put in the hours together.
The vocalist stands out right away. Deep and intense, his tone has that gritty warmth that recalls Eddie Vedder at his most reflective, while still maintaining its own character. There’s a sincerity in every syllable. The reverb treatment on the vocals adds space to the mix without making it feel artificial, it breathes naturally, filling the gaps left by the spacious chord progression.
Musically, Broken walks a smart line between alternative rock and something slightly more cinematic. There are rhythm shifts that catch you off guard, in a good way. You’re never quite settled, which mirrors the emotional tension within the track itself. The guitars growl without posturing, the drums pull back and surge forward with intention, and the whole thing feels like it could serve as the soundtrack to a dystopian sci-fi film.
But what truly stands out is the honesty. There are no digital frills, no programmed beats, no polished-to-death production tricks. Just a band that clearly knows their craft, playing together in a way that feels earned. It’s the kind of song that reminds you why guitars, drums, and a voice in a room can still matter.
