Childlike is Varun Das’ Single Out Now
Good Day Noir Family,
Varun Das’s new single Childlike opens like a question mark, a delicate yet disorienting rhythm that feels as though it’s walking a tightrope between structure and chaos.

Right from the first few bars, there’s a refined instability at play, a musical tightness laced with unexpected turns. You feel slightly off-balance, and that’s precisely the point.
Childlike thrives on surprise, built around jazz-rooted intuition but pushing far into experimental territory. The rhythm section — spearheaded by Das himself on drums — is agile and expressive, constantly shifting gears without losing the thread. It’s a performance that doesn’t just show technique; it uses it to unsettle and draw you into a strange dance between elegance and unrest.
There’s a kind of magic to the way this ensemble operates. The saxophone floats in and out with ease, offering lines that feel improvised but emotionally precise, like thoughts drifting in a dream. Harmonies bend and stretch in ways that feel intentional and unexpected, offering moments that are at once sophisticated and raw. The result is an unpredictable journey that invites active listening.
It’s clear that Das isn’t just a drummer, he’s a conductor of sorts, orchestrating a group of high-caliber musicians whose chemistry borders on the telepathic. Each player has room to breathe, yet their parts always circle back to a shared musical conversation. The percussion work deserves special mention: Das doesn’t overpower, but rather anchors the piece with subtle force, guiding the composition with quiet authority.
Childlike is not a casual listen. It demands attention, and rewards it with moments of intricate beauty and emotional resonance. It’s music that doesn’t settle, constantly reaching for new shapes and ideas while holding onto a sense of intimacy that keeps it grounded.
