Good Day Noir Family,
“Cowards and Shadows” carries the unmistakable DNA of ‘90s alternative rock, yet it’s infused with a tenderness that feels timeless.

The guitar tone alone sets the atmosphere — warm, unpolished in just the right way, and evocative of an era when songs were built on raw emotion and carefully chosen textures.

Over this foundation, Amaka’s voice glides with fragility and quiet strength, drawing you in with an intimacy that feels almost confessional.

The track evokes echoes of The Cranberries’ melodic melancholy and Grant Lee Buffalo’s cinematic storytelling. It’s a ballad at heart, but one with the pulse of alternative rock running through its veins. This is music that doesn’t shout to be heard — it resonates, allowing its emotional weight to seep in gradually.

Lyrically, “Cowards and Shadows” reflects on the growing superficiality of modern relationships, where genuine connections are harder to find in an increasingly fast-paced, distracted world. The song doesn’t deliver its message with cynicism, but with a reflective honesty, as if Amaka is inviting the listener to pause and consider the distance that often exists between people in the digital age.

Producer Andy Zanini shapes the arrangement with a masterful sense of space. Slide guitar lines drift in like fading sunlight, while crunchy rhythm layers add grit without overpowering the song’s gentle core. The interplay of these textures creates a twilight atmosphere — nostalgic, slightly haunting, yet undeniably beautiful. Every element feels deliberate, from the lingering sustain of the chords to the subtle shifts in dynamic that keep the track emotionally alive.

Resonant!

Fiona Amaka’s Cowards and Shadows is her second release of 2025. Recorded in London with producer and guitarist Andy Zanini, the track was inspired by the recurring topic of ghosting—something Fiona noticed had spread beyond personal relationships into areas like job-hunting. She began performing the unfinished song at acoustic open mics, where audiences quickly connected with its theme. Encouraged by the response, she decided to record it. Fiona Amaka and the Fiona Amaka Band will perform Cowards and Shadows live at the Camden Weekender Festival on 30 August. The first half of 2025 has been a busy one for the band, with gigs across London, all of which they have thoroughly enjoyed.
