This album isn’t easily categorized; it’s a striking blend of gothic, jazz, and experimental elements that continually surprise and haunt you as the music unfurls.
The journey begins with I Put a Spell on You, where a delicate xylophone riff opens the track, paving the way for a sound that seems suspended in a realm all its own.
It immediately pulls you into a mysterious space, as if stepping into a fog-filled alleyway of sound. The atmosphere is one of tension, with no rush to reveal itself, and you’re left intrigued by the strange, almost supernatural quality of it all.
Following this, Hypnoxotica presents an immersive experience that lulls the listener into a trance. The track features a haunting, distant female vocal that feels like a whisper in the dark, drawing you closer to the unknown.
The hypnotic rhythm and ethereal arrangements give the song a dreamlike quality, as if you’re drifting in and out of reality. It’s almost as though the music is calling you into an abyss that frightens and mesmerizes you.
Fever continues the theme of spectral presence, with a distinct ghostly atmosphere. The xylophone here recalls familiar melodies, but the eerie arrangement transforms them into something unsettling.
It’s as though you’re listening to music from another time, yet distorted by a veil of shadowy energy. This piece firmly cements the album’s playful yet macabre nature, blending the sounds of jazz with an almost playful darkness.
The album’s mood shifts once again with Rain. The composition feels like you’re caught in a storm of thoughts, the xilophone rhythm accompanied by increasingly spooky sounds, leaving a lingering sense of unease.
Taboo stands out as one of the album’s most striking moments. The vocals here take on an otherworldly presence, echoing like a siren’s call. The voice glides over you, drawing you deeper into the unknown with a strange, seductive pull.
It’s an unsettling invitation, coaxing you to face something you don’t quite understand—yet can’t resist. It’s chilling and magnetic, a perfect balance of fear and fascination.
In contrast, Lucretia My Reflection introduces a more alternative gothic rock approach. However, even within this more traditional style, The Infernal Order of the Black Flame manages to infuse its sound with its unique vision. The track feels dynamic yet still laced with an air of mystery and dark intrigue.
The album closes with Curse of the Endless Night, which serves as a final ritualistic offering. The song brings together everything the duo has cultivated throughout the album: refined moments of beauty, paired with deep, foreboding terror.
The ethereal vocals on this track feel like a closing incantation—mesmerizing, commanding, and a little terrifying. The song feels like the end of a ceremony, leaving you with a sense of completion, yet still haunted by the journey you’ve just experienced.
Gothxotica is an album that doesn’t just play music; it creates an experience. The Infernal Order of the Black Flame has crafted a world of their own—innovative, dark, and ever so captivating.
