Rosetta West, veterans of the underground blues-rock circuit, deliver a raw, electrified set that sounds like it was torn straight from the floorboards of a smoky Chicago club.
The album kicks off with grit and swagger. “Dora Lee” growls with blues intensity, its guitar lines scratching like a good back itch—rough, satisfying. Then comes “Suzie,” a sultry slow-burn that leans more toward the desert-hazed territory of Queens of the Stone Age, with a slinky pulse and breathy danger. It simmers more than it shouts, and that restraint pays off.
“Deeper Than Magic” might be the wild card here. It sounds less like a song and more like a spell—otherworldly, trance-like, and ritualistic. With its winding structure and mystical edge, it feels made for moonlit forest ceremonies rather than radio play, and that’s exactly what makes it stand out.
“Baby Doll” jerks us back to earth with a no-nonsense guitar riff that hits like a jolt of caffeine. It’s the kind of track that gets heads nodding and boots stomping—lean, loud, and to the point.
The album closes with “Venous Blue,” a dusty sonic journey that feels like a slow cruise through a forgotten ghost town. The intro guitar tone alone paints a landscape of faded neon signs and sideways glances. Then the groove kicks in, bringing a ZZ Top-style swagger that ties the whole record together with denim and smoke.
Recorded mostly live at Chicago’s Gravity Studios with Doug McBride at the board, Gravity Sessions captures Rosetta West at their most immediate and unfiltered. This isn’t nostalgia—it’s lived-in, dirty, and real.
