Good Day Noir Family,
Jesse Davis opens his EP It’s Hard to Get Out of the World with Selfish, and it only takes a few seconds to understand you’re stepping into something deeply personal.

The vocal treatment—slightly muffled and lo-fi—adds weight rather than distance. It feels like a confession recorded late at night, just for you.

The arrangement is stripped down, almost skeletal, with strummed guitar lines that recall the emotional rawness of Grant Lee Buffalo, but with a twist of retro introspection that sets Davis apart.

Which Way to the Beach arrives like a dream barely formed. The reverberated guitar feels like sunlight bouncing off water, blurring edges and softening the atmosphere. It’s slow, almost motionless, like floating in a memory. There’s a cinematic quality to it—not flashy, but immersive in its own hazy way.

Falling Back Asleep shifts into more surreal territory. The guitar takes on a psychedelic shimmer, bending and swirling with a sense of disorientation. There’s a David Bowie-like curiosity in the song’s structure, and even traces of Radiohead’s experimental melancholy. It’s not chaotic—just a quiet unraveling of form and feeling.

The title track, It’s Hard to Get Out of the World, is the emotional core of the EP. Opening with a soft arpeggio, the track feels like mist rolling over mountain roads—lonely, vast, and strangely peaceful. This is the kind of song you play on an aimless drive through fog-covered hills, where thoughts spill out into the silence. Davis doesn’t force a climax. Instead, he lets the track evolve naturally, growing in quiet power until it leaves you full without ever overflowing.

This EP draws you in by staying honest. Jesse Davis writes like someone who knows the value of restraint, and every choice feels intentional.
