Good Day Noir Family,
Newborn Fossil, the new EP by Marcus: The Apex Predator!, bursts open with its title track in a rush of gritty guitar tones and raw energy.

Newborn Fossil is Marcus: The Apex Predator!’s Ep Out Now

It’s a bold introduction—one that instantly recalls the jagged urgency of the ’90s alternative scene, but recharged with a punk-tinged vocal edge and a sense of urgency that feels very current. The sound is stripped down yet purposeful, like a direct hit to the chest.

“Lo-Fi” shifts gears without losing momentum. It begins with a cleverly crafted guitar motif, and the rhythm section brings in a syncopated pulse that feels tight yet unpredictable. The band plays with tempo and dynamics in a way that creates intentional instability. When the chorus hits, the track swells with more drive, but never loses its angular shape.

“The First Summer” introduces a slightly brighter tone, showing that Marcus: The Apex Predator! can pivot without softening their core identity. There’s clarity in how they build their sound—it doesn’t rely on gloss, but on deliberate choices that underline their growing identity as a band unafraid of nuance.

“Plenty & Shine” stands out thanks to its gritty, hypnotic riff and the background vocals that lift the chorus into unexpected places. It’s lean, but layered. Every element counts. The closer, “No Fraction,” takes a darker turn. There’s something dystopian in its sonic structure, but it never collapses under its own weight. Instead, it walks the line between control and chaos with surprising precision.

Throughout Newborn Fossil, what becomes most apparent is the band’s ability to shape disorder into art. Marcus: The Apex Predator! don’t follow a trend—they carve their own sonic path, and this EP is a clear mark of that identity. Grit, brains, and unpredictability—this band has them all in spades.

Marcus: the Apex Predator! is a Detroit-based indie/post-hardcore outfit. Formed in 2015, Kevin Watts (guitars, vocals, songwriter) teams up again with Float Here Forever bandmate, Nick Marko (drums and percussion) for the band’s 2025 “Newborn Fossil” EP. Sean Bondareff (Kind Beast) lays down the bass this time around. The tracks were recorded and mixed by Jake Shives and mastered by Grammy-winning Detroit legend, Dave Feeny, at Tempermill Studios.

M:tAP! prides itself in representing its hometown Detroit roots by existing in the in-between—finding a niche between the melodic and the aggressive, the thoughtful and the fun, and the big, angular riffs that still manage to sweet-talk their way into your ear.
