Resistance is Headlong Retreat’s Single out Now
Announcing their upcoming full-length album Pith & Vinegar, the track stands out for its direct approach and earnest energy.
At the heart of this project is Bill Neely, the principal songwriter whose ideas serve as the creative nucleus around which the band shapes their sound.
“Resistance” leans into a rootsy blend of folk and blues, stitched together with a vintage songwriting style that evokes memories of late-era Beatles, yet still speaks clearly in the present tense. It’s not nostalgia for its own sake—there’s a clear intent behind every chord and word. With the current global climate being marked by unrest and uncertainty, the song finds its voice as a reaction to that chaos.
Lyrically, Neely doesn’t hold back. The words cut with clarity, expressing frustration, hope, and the grit to push forward. There’s a tangible energy in the way the band delivers the track—gritty guitars, steady rhythms, and an unfiltered production that stands in stark contrast to today’s over-processed norms. This isn’t something polished in a digital lab. It breathes.
What truly sets “Resistance” apart is the authenticity of the performance. No programmed beats, no artificial sheen—just a group of musicians channelling a shared message. Bill Neely’s voice rises above the mix with a tone that immediately grabs attention. Distinctive and emotive, his vocal presence is a defining element of the band’s identity.
Headlong Retreat reminds us that music, at its core, is meant to stir something within, to challenge and to inspire. “Resistance” does exactly that, and more.

Solid!
Headlong Retreat is the latest project from sardonic songwriter Bill Neely, known for his sharp wit and offbeat lyricism. Formerly of the band Left Field—famed for ironic tracks like “Billions of Brain Cells” and “Dance of the Knee Jerk Reactionaries”—Neely now resides on Ireland’s west coast, where he continues to collaborate remotely with longtime musical allies Bill Bly, Liz Emmert, Doug Miles, and Mark Dann.
Their upcoming album Pith & Vinegar, set for release in May, blends folk, rock, jazz, and Latin jazz, offering both biting humor and pointed social commentary. Its first single, “Resistance,” channels the spirit of classic protest songs, urging listeners to push back against today’s rising tides of unrest.
