Good Day Noir Family,
Mahto and The Loose Balloons have crafted something rare with their new EP Something Old, Something New, Something Borrowed, Something Blue: a quiet rebellion against noise, speed, and the overstimulation of the everyday.

This collection of songs doesn’t shout—it gently taps you on the shoulder and invites you to breathe.

The EP opens with Parking Lots, a track that pulls you into its orbit with stripped-back guitar strumming and a voice that recalls the honesty of Simon & Garfunkel. There’s a certain stillness in the performance, one that speaks directly to the listener without needing to embellish. It’s delicate, yes—but never fragile. The song knows exactly what it wants to say and says it with calm authority.

Self-Portrait at 30 follows, and it arrives like a light spring drizzle—soft, unexpected, and quietly affecting. The arpeggiated guitar patterns fall into place naturally, while the lyrics offer a moment of introspection that feels personal and broadly relatable. These songs don’t rush—they take their time, and that’s precisely their strength.

Throughout the EP, subtle flourishes—a gentle harmonica here, a vocal inflection there—add color without overwhelming the framework.

Crisscross is a standout, painting such vivid imagery that you can almost feel yourself standing at the intersection the lyrics describe. It’s a song that functions like a faded photograph: worn at the edges but rich with memory.

Closing the EP is Lunch w/ You (Bagels), the warmest and most communal track of the bunch. It feels like something you’d sing with friends around a campfire—a little looser, a little lighter, but still grounded in that same emotional sincerity. It’s the kind of song that makes you feel like you’ve known it forever.

What sets this EP apart is its refusal to overcomplicate. There’s beauty in the minimalism here, and it gives space for the lyrics and performances to resonate truly. These aren’t songs built for algorithmic virality—they’re songs built for the soul.

Mahto & The Loose Balloons, hailing from Johnson City, United States, is a musical project led mostly by Mahto himself, with a touch of collaboration from his friend Niko Graham who contributed the song “Crisscross” to the EP, adapted in the Mahto style. Matt Sykes from Downspout Records handled the mixing and mastering of the tracks, resulting in a cohesive and authentic sound.
