Threats is BELLHEAD’s Ep Out Now
From the incipit, the duo establishes a mood of foreboding, with the lead singer delivering an almost theatrical vocal performance that commands attention.
As Threats builds toward the chorus, the intensity surges, revealing the band’s ability to turn tension into a chaotic burst of sound.
“Heart Shaped Hole” takes a different route, starting with a deep, steady groove that quickly gives way to a distorted bass, creating a dense, hypnotic aura. The absence of guitars is barely noticeable as BELLHEAD’s ingenious use of bass and synths fills the space. The track pulses with intensity, proving that even minimal setups can lead to massive sonic depth.
The third track, “Shutters + Stutters,” slows things down. It begins with the eerie, static hum of a car radio, before evolving into something that could be described as a gothic lullaby. The cool, detached keyboard tones enhance the track’s sense of nostalgia and coldness, and as the song swells, it becomes almost entrancing, carrying a quiet but undeniable intensity.
“No Dead Horses” is a standout moment on the EP. The vocal interplay between the male and female singers creates a dynamic tension, heightened by the mechanical beat of a drum machine. Midway through, a hypnotic keyboard melody emerges, adding a layer of mystery and intrigue. The song feels like an enigmatic ritual unfolding in real time, its dark atmosphere unsettling and magnetic.
With “Double Jeopardy,” BELLHEAD introduces a cinematic atmosphere where bass and keys take center stage. The track feels epic in scale, its brooding tones evoking the image of thick London fog, hiding secrets in its depths. The gradual build-up of the track adds a sense of anticipation, making it feel like a journey into the unknown.
The EP reaches its fever pitch with “Bad Taste,” a track that opens with an alarm-like sound before launching into a pulsating, industrial rhythm. The track’s chaotic energy is reminiscent of The Prodigy, with the manic vocal delivery—reminiscent of Marilyn Manson’s distorted megaphone style—fueling the track’s wild intensity. The song’s breakneck pace and raw energy would make it a perfect fit for an underground club in Berlin.
Closing out the EP is a remix of “Heart Shaped Hole,” which slows things down and morphs into a trance-like version of the original. The remix amplifies the song’s hypnotic qualities, showcasing BELLHEAD’s ability to find beauty in minimalism and subtle transformation.
The duo knows exactly how to manipulate space and texture to create music that resonates with darkness, yet never loses its captivating drive.
