Tricks of the Light is E.G. Phillips’ Ep Out Now

Good Day Noir Family,
With Tricks of the Light, E.G. Phillips opens a door into a world that feels timeless and vividly personal.

Tricks of the Light is E.G. Phillips’ Ep Out Now

From the first gentle notes of From the Corner of My Eye, there’s a cinematic quality that draws you in,  a delicate guitar arpeggio sets the scene, soon joined by lush string arrangements that feel less like accompaniment and more like characters in the unfolding narrative. It’s subtle, refined, and instantly evocative.

The Light You Reflect continues with the same level of grace, but here Phillips leans further into his storytelling gift. There’s a warmth in the phrasing, a clarity in the imagery — every lyric feels like it was carefully etched into the song. You’re not just listening; you’re watching it all unfold in your head, like scenes from a lost classic.

Albatross Song brings a shift in tone. The tempo presses slightly forward, and with it comes the feeling of ocean winds and harbour streets. It’s still elegant, still cinematic, but with a weightier presence — as if the song itself is moving through mist and salt air. It paints a scene with broad strokes, but never overstates.

By the time In the Flesh of Birds arrives, Phillips delivers what might be the most delicate moment of the EP. His voice feels lighter here, almost whispering its way through an arrangement that recalls the rich, orchestrated textures of another era, when recordings were built with patience and reverence. It’s not nostalgic for its own sake; it’s crafted with care and detail that’s rare to find.

The closer, When It Gets Dark, leans into noir tones with a gentle swing and just enough shadow. It’s the kind of closing track that doesn’t seek a climax — it drifts downward like the credits of a black-and-white film, steady and reflective.

Tricks of the Light feels like a secret shared at midnight — subtle, rich, and unmistakably human. E.G. Phillips doesn’t chase trends; he carves out a world of his own, and it’s one well worth entering.
