The opening track, “Wake Up Mr. Kupferberg – Enterlude”, prepares you for an immersive experience rather than just a collection of songs.

A futuristic, almost prophetic voice guides the listener like an oracle from the beyond, followed by the surreal presence of a flight attendant inviting us to embark on a metaphysical journey. It’s an introduction that primes you for something truly unconventional.

Next comes “Sunchild”, a track that showcases Jakob The Liar’s ability to blend singer-songwriter sensibilities with an offbeat, syncopated rhythm. The melody is refined, exuding a thoughtful intensity reminiscent of Bowie’s visionary style.

Then there’s “Vi@gr@ Falls & P!$$ Graffiti”, a rock-infused piece highlighting the artist’s unique approach to songwriting. It’s hard to pinpoint direct influences, but there’s an unmistakable English flair in how Jakob interprets his lyrics, full of emphasis and conviction. The track has a raw, almost rebellious energy that makes it stand out.

“H E A R T B E A T” follows, offering a more delicate side to the EP. It’s a ballad with a melody that feels almost inspiring, bringing a softer, reflective moment amidst the eclectic mix of sounds. It serves as a brief respite before the EP dives back into its dynamic experimentation.

One of the standout tracks, “Paradigm $H!T”, blends gothic and alternative rock influences with unpredictable tempo changes and intricate rhythmic patterns. There’s even a hint of Middle Eastern nuance embedded in the arrangement, adding an unexpected texture to the piece. This song perfectly encapsulates Jakob The Liar’s bold artistic vision.

The EP closes with “A Song Like You”, perhaps the most pop-leaning track of the collection. It’s accessible and slightly more melodic, yet still avoids predictability. The song’s catchiness doesn’t compromise its artistic integrity, maintaining a balanced yet memorable finish to the EP.

Jakob The Liar is a visionary artist with Wake Up Mr. Kupferberg, crafting an eclectic and ambitious project that challenges norms while remaining surprisingly relatable.

Jakob The Liar, aka Jakob Kupferberg, is an enigmatic singer-songwriter and musician whose music reflects a life shaped by adversity and transformation. Growing up with his father’s battered guitars as a refuge, Jakob found solace in songwriting during a turbulent childhood. After a mystery illness stole a decade of his life, his recovery fueled a new creative spirit.

As he traveled the world seeking purpose and healing, Jakob honed his unpredictable yet therapeutic style, releasing two EPs—Crystallised in Moonshine and Sweet Surrender—under his civil name, garnering praise from the indie press. Following his mother’s passing, Jakob channeled his grief into new music, laying the groundwork for his debut LP, The Great Awakening.

Adopting his stage name from the titular character of Jurek Becker’s Jacob the Liar, Jakob blends folk, pop, and rock to explore the extremes of human experience. Influenced by Jeff Buckley’s melodic vulnerability and Zach de la Rocha’s fierce resolve, Jakob’s music speaks to survival, truth, and rebirth.
