Good Day Noir Family,
Maverick Smith’s We Make Fire, They Make Smoke opens with the unmistakable rattle of drumsticks counting off—a no-frills introduction that immediately sets the tone.

This is a band that plays together, live, loud, and without pretense. The first track, Sinking Feeling, is a slow-burning ballad, full of texture and honesty.

You can almost feel the fingers sliding across guitar strings, the kind of detail that makes the recording breathe. There’s a vulnerability here, but also warmth, like flipping through an old photo album.

Things shift gears with Feel It Back, where the tempo rises and the energy kicks in. The guitars carry a melodic crunch reminiscent of early Weezer, while the vocals soar with a raw clarity that brings the emotional core into focus. The band knows how to balance edge with tunefulness, and the chorus lands hard.

Mary Lou stands out with its swagger. Opening with a riff that echoes Wild Thing, it erupts into a punk-fueled jam that feels built for sweaty basement shows. This time the male vocals take the lead, delivering a punchy, playful performance that brings a new color to the album’s palette.

Digital Arcade continues the journey with a retro twist. Its rock-forward vibe is fused with synth stabs that echo ‘80s arcade games, cleverly tying nostalgia to innovation without losing grit. It’s a standout track for its sonic contrast.

Closing with So What Who Cares, the drummer again sets the tempo, bringing the record full circle. The song blends dusty Americana tones with road-trip-ready lyrics. There’s even a fiddle that cuts through the mix, lending a homespun charm to the final stretch.

This record thrives on contrast—male and female vocals, soft and loud, vintage and fresh—and yet it always feels cohesive. Maverick Smith doesn’t just make fire—they fan it, and let it spread.

Authentic!

At the core of Maverick Smith is a refusal to be confined by genre. The band’s new record blends alternative rock with shades of punk, southern rock, indie folk, shoegaze, garage, and even orchestral elements — yet it never loses its throughline. It’s bold. It’s alive. And it’s all real.

We do not go into a song thinking about what genre it belongs to — we just follow where the song wants to go,” says songwriter and producer Sean Boynes. “Sometimes it leans country, sometimes punk or blues. We don’t stop it. If it feels honest, we chase it down. Let someone else figure out what to call it.
