Ettie is a writer first and foremost, using writing and storytelling as an escape, whether it was from being bullied very badly through school or her challenging upbringing at home. She wrote her first songs aged nine, having taught herself to play the guitar, and started gigging around London when she was 16, trying desperately to be cool as a pop punk singer on a scene where pop punk wasn’t cool at all. At Uni she studied English Literature, specialising in Shakespeare whose work became a huge contributor to her love of lyricism and wordplay.
Coming out as a lesbian “later in life” in her early twenties presides over her experience. All of a sudden there was no reason to hide anything anymore. With no skeletons in the closet Ettie channelled her love of Patti Smith, early 2000s boyband anthems and female fronted rock into her own unapologetic take on what crashing guitars, thoughtful lyrics and big melodies can achieve together.
