The Manky Melters Tant qu’on est ivre Review

AUDIO VERSION

The Manky Melters won me over from the opening song of their EP, “Tant qu’on est ivre.” There is something immediately familiar in these melodies, as though they have traveled across oceans and survived generations of late-night gatherings. The title track evokes musical traditions that settlers carried with them, with passages that recall Appalachian folk. You can almost picture a village gathering, where stories pass between strangers and everyone knows the chorus.

Beneath that communal warmth sits a darker idea. The EP draws inspiration from Tolstoy’s reflections in War and Peace, exploring how enthusiasm and illusion sustain human existence until painful lucidity exposes its underlying absurdity. That perspective gives the music an interesting tension. These songs make you want to celebrate, even as their conceptual foundation questions the things that keep us going.

“Never Grow Cold” opens with a violin that wraps around you and pulls you through the swinging doors of an imaginary saloon. Its melody suggests a room full of people singing together, glasses raised and voices growing louder. The change of pace brings a real rush. The song accelerates into a fast, forceful passage, turning that welcoming atmosphere into a full-blown invitation to dance. The insistent rhythm makes sitting still feel almost unreasonable.

Tant qu’on est ivre – Sound and Atmosphere

What appeals to me most is the way these traditional sounds create such vivid scenes. The violin carries emotion and gives the music a human presence. The rhythms suggest crowded rooms, wooden floors, and the pleasure of sharing a song with people you have only just met. There is a restless spirit here that suits the EP’s reflections on enthusiasm and escape.

Closing track “Molly” keeps that spirit alive with another irresistible invitation to sing along. Musically, it feels uplifting, driven by a persistent pulse and melodies that encourage you to join in. It is easy to imagine a pint of beer in hand, surrendering to the rhythm while the room erupts around you.

Tant qu’on est ivre – Final Thoughts

The Manky Melters bring together philosophical weight and the physical release of lively folk music. “Tant qu’on est ivre” leaves you with the urge to dance, sing, and loosen your grip on everyday worries. Its deeper questions linger after the party, giving this spirited EP something to offer once the glasses are empty.
