Expedient Means is Blackbird Rebellion’s Ep Out Now
The opening track “Backfire” kicks things off with a guitar riff that feels like it’s been waiting to burst out of an amplifier all day.
The drums come in like a force of nature, amped up and alive, before the song unexpectedly drops into a more spacious verse—revealing the band’s ability to balance raw energy with control. The lead vocals glide across the mix with a tone that calls to mind echoes of Morten Harket, adding a touch of elegance to the grit.
“A Blister On My Pinky Toe” keeps things moving with a tight, propulsive rhythm and an almost cinematic sweep. There’s something about the track’s structure and mood that recalls the emotional weight of ‘90s alt-rock, bands like Live that weren’t afraid to get dramatic while keeping things grounded.
“Let It All Go” delivers pure momentum. Arpeggiated guitar lines add texture beneath soaring melodies, before distorted riffs open the mix like storm clouds cracking. It’s energetic without being chaotic, and the layers never overwhelm—the arrangement stays sharp and intentional.
“Phobophobia” leans into more experimental territory. The chord changes shift like unstable ground beneath your feet, but the band doesn’t let it slip too far—they find a groove and hold it just long enough to let the song breathe. It’s a slightly left-field entry that adds dimension without breaking cohesion.
The closer, “House Of Cards,” is where things truly elevate. The opening guitar line, steeped in reverb, immediately evokes the haunted mood of Nancy Sinatra’s “Bang Bang,” but darker and more fragile. The vocal performance here is dramatic and tense, like holding your breath before something gives way—and when it does, the payoff is massive. There’s emotional weight, cinematic scope, and a controlled explosion that feels earned rather than expected.
Expedient Means is the work of a band unafraid to go big, but wise enough to know when to pull back.
