E.A.Poets Approved/Bands We Like – Monokino

Good Day Noir Family,
our “E.A.Poets Approved/Bands We Like” section is dedicated to Monokino. I discovered this Artist while shuffling songs on Spotify and was fascinated by his music.

The unique sound proposed by this artist immediately intrigued me. An innovative compositional style that has influences from the past but manages to be modern at the same time.

A mix among The Cure, Depeche Mode, Beck. A very original alchemy capable of creating a sound blend that is difficult to label.

This music seems to hide a secret and somehow the melody of the new single Baby speaks directly to your subconscious, awakening ancestral emotions.

Monokino’s music made me fly with my imagination and I imagined myself driving a fast black car through the streets of Los Angeles as pictured in the movie Blade Runner.

Crepuscular and hypnotic music that ranges from gothic to alternative rock and that manages to entertain the listener with interesting rhythmic and melodic variations.

A fantastic find that I recommend to everyone.

Hypnotic and Nostalgic!

Monokino is the alias for Dutch pop composer George van Wetering who also formed and fronted the indie band of the same name and was once part of the growing roster of foreign acts released by Chinese record company Modern Sky, a major player in the Asian music industry.

Taking cues from artists across the cultural spectrum, Monokino was once hailed as “the industrial goth band before the EDM cult of personality took over.” Monokino gained a large following in China while also gaining traction in North America. He completed five consecutive tours of China and North America, visiting landmark festivals from China’s Strawberry Festival to SXSW in the US.

Monokino collaborated with Tony Visconti and the artist Kristeen Young on their most popular track “New Kid,” and with Dutch artist/producer Jacco Gardner. Monokino’s records have been released by Dutch label Konkurrent, Zip Records (USA/the Netherlands), and Modern Sky (China). At the end of 2020 Monokino released a new single called “No Return.” The song was positively reviewed by the press: “Monokino is releasing an incredibly original cross genre track titled ‘No Return.’ He has concocted a savvy blend of electronica, pop, rock, and baroque-inspired sonorities that act as the perfect sonic structure for him to layer his vocals, in Mandarin!”

His latest singles “Your Underground” and “Bend or Break” (2021) have gained support from a diverse range of tastemakers including Janice Long on BBC Radio Wales, and he was also recently acclaimed as “UK artist of the week.”
