The first LP, The Other Side Of Zero: I, begins with “On Broken Wings,” a track that wastes no time in pulling you into its shadowy domain. Eerie keys open the piece, drawing a line straight into unsettling territory before a clean guitar arpeggio and an emotional vocal line take hold. The chorus erupts like a cry from deep within—a release of tension that gives the song its shape and power. There’s a dystopian undercurrent here, something fractured but deliberate.
“My Humanity” follows and completely shifts the energy. This is pure weight—massive, galloping riffs tear through the silence like a black avalanche. It’s a full-throttle charge, a modern metal anthem with echoes of classic grit, where intensity doesn’t overshadow emotion but instead enhances it.
“Devil Walking Me” offers contrast, drifting into darker ballad territory with a slightly psychedelic twist. The pacing is deliberate, with an emotional vocal melody that feels almost suspended in time. There’s a ‘90s flavor here—melancholic yet strangely groovy—that conjures memories of when alternative music had teeth.
The closing track of Part I, “The Other Side Of Zero,” loops back to the atmospheric territory. Then comes “The Bleeding Edge,” where darkness and aggression collide. The guitar work is thunderous, with detuned menace that occasionally recalls the weight of bands like Korn. But it’s never just heaviness for its own sake—the band balances this with a vocal performance full of ‘90s-era warmth and grime, something that roots the song emotionally even as it shakes the walls.
The closer, “Piece-less Puzzle,” is the most surprising. It shifts tone completely—less burdened, more reflective. It feels like sitting on the edge of a rooftop at dawn, bruised but breathing. Hints of Alice in Chains and Blind Melon creep in, making this feel like a forgotten gem from the heyday of MTV Unplugged.
There’s no denying the creative drive behind The Other Side Of Zero: I & II. It’s heavy without being empty, emotional without being indulgent, and ambitious without losing coherence. A Floor Below has put serious thought and heart into this two-part release, and it shows.
