Reflective Horns To Save Reindeer

November is the most dangerous time of year for road accidents involving wild animals. More than 12,000 cases occurred last year, peaking in November, according to statistics from Finland. The city of Raseborg has had an average incident involving a white-tailed deer every day last year.

According to data collected by insurance company LähiTapiola, the southwestern city of Raseborg (Raasepori in Finnish) has had the most accidents with white-tailed deer, 365 or an average of one per day.

Here is the brilliant intuition of Finland’s Reindeer Herders’ Association: apply a special reflective spray on the horns and, alternatively, on the fur of some animals, able to make these deer clearly visible if illuminated by a car or motorcycle headlight.

Now we need to wait for the results of this experimental intervention and see if there is a possible implementation on a large scale. Will there come a time when we will see deer and little fluorescent curls cross the street?

Just one last detail for the most attentive animal rights activists, the product applied on the first 20 specimens in Finland is of two types: one permanent, for the horns, and another, for the fur, intended to go away with rainwater.
