This October The Giant Pumpkin Regatta, Are You In?

Do you want to do something different this Halloween? We suggest you this weird event that is to be done at least once in a lifetime.

The word “sport” appears for the first time in England in 1532 and means fun. It comes from the old French “desport”, from which the Spanish “deporte” and the Italian “diporto” (leisure, entertainment) also originate.

Widespread in Germany and also in Canada and the USA, the regatta of the giant pumpkins is a spectacular sport that takes place every year in this period. It is a full-fledged regatta except that instead of the classic canoes or sailboats, the competitors compete aboard huge giant pumpkins.

Each participant builds his own boat by getting a pumpkin of the giant variety and emptying it entirely, but being careful not to cut the outer skin that makes the small boat waterproof. The giant pumpkins turn out to be large enough to accommodate a person on board and navigate the water.

The winner is the one who cuts first at the finish line, but points are accumulated to win by judging the size of the pumpkin itself. This is not a simple sport: competitors must row trying to keep their balance and trying not to wreck their “makeshift boat”.

if you live in the US you can participate in the regatta in Oregon, the event is free!

Saturday, Oct. 16, 2021 10:00am–4:00pm Lake of the Commons 8325 S.W. Nyberg St. Tualatin, OR
